Why Bellingham is a Great College Town: Benefits and Challenges for Students
I’ve been spending some time thinking about what it’s like to be a college student in Bellingham, Washington, and I have to say, it’s a pretty unique experience. I am a graduate of Western Washington University and if you’re considering college here or just curious about what life is like in this charming town, let me fill you in on the pros and cons of living, working, and playing in Bellingham as a college student.
Why Bellingham Rocks for College Students
1. A College Town with a Chill Vibe
Bellingham is home to Western Washington University, and the town has a real college-town feel without being overwhelming. It’s a place where you can easily find student-friendly amenities and activities. The campus itself is beautiful, with views of the bay and mountains, and there are plenty of student events, from club fairs to live performances, happening all the time. You’ll feel like you’re part of a close-knit community where everyone is passionate about their studies and interests.
2. Accessible Student Housing Options
Compared to many other college towns, Bellingham offers relatively accessible housing options. Whether you’re looking for on-campus dorms or off-campus apartments, you’ll find a range of choices that won’t break the bank. There are also some great historic neighborhoods with homes full of history and awesome architecture that are close to campus offering budget-friendly rents, which is a huge plus if you’re trying to manage expenses while juggling your studies. There is a high probability of needing roommates, but the houses can be big enough that cost per room isn’t too bad.
3. Access to Outdoor Adventures
If you’re an outdoor enthusiast or just like to get outside and blow off some steam, Bellingham is perfect. You’ve got immediate access to an array of outdoor activities, from hiking and mountain biking in the nearby Chuckanut Mountains & Galbraith, to swimming, kayaking, or paddleboarding in Bellingham Bay. During the winter, Mount Baker is just a short drive away for skiing and snowboarding. The best part? Many of these activities are either free or very affordable, making it easy to enjoy nature without spending a fortune.
4. A Strong Sense of Community
One of the coolest things about Bellingham is its strong sense of community. The town is known for its welcoming atmosphere, and this extends to students. Whether you’re joining a student club or participating in community service, you’ll find that people are eager to get involved and help each other out. The local community supports student initiatives and often welcomes students into various local events and activities, which is a great way to make connections and feel at home. Don’t miss the Art Walk, Commercial Night Market, Farmers Market, and tons of Fun Runs’s designed to bring the community together as a whole.
A Few Things to Consider
1. Limited Nightlife Options
While Bellingham has its fair share of coffee shops, casual eateries, and low-key bars, the nightlife scene can be a bit limited compared to larger cities. If you’re looking for a bustling nightlife with a variety of clubs, late-night events, and big concerts, you might find Bellingham somewhat quiet. The town does have some REALLY great spots for a relaxed evening out with amazing food, drinks + mocktails, and music, but if you’re craving a more vibrant party scene, you might need to head to Seattle or Vancouver occasionally. Speaking of, the proximity to Seattle and Vancouver nightlife is exactly what makes Bellingham so incredible. There are always endless possibilities between these two major metropolis’s available for just about anyone if you’re up for an adventure!
2. Weather Variability
The weather in Bellingham can be a bit unpredictable, which might take some getting used to. While the town enjoys a mild climate overall, you can experience a mix of sunshine, clouds, and rain, sometimes all in the same day. This variability might affect your plans for outdoor activities or just make it tricky to dress for the day. It’s a good idea to be prepared for changing conditions and invest in a reliable rain jacket and layers for those “just in case” moments. And guess what, we have some great outdoor gear stores to purchase that new jacket!
Wrapping It Up
Being a college student in Bellingham has its perks and challenges. On the plus side, you’ll enjoy a supportive college environment, affordable housing, easy access to outdoor adventures, and a strong community vibe. On the flip side, the nightlife options are somewhat limited, and the weather can be a bit unpredictable.
Overall, if you’re drawn to a college experience that combines academic focus with a love for the outdoors and a welcoming community, Bellingham could be a fantastic choice. It’s a place where you can balance your studies with plenty of opportunities for fun and relaxation.
