Why I Love Festivals in Bellingham

One of the things I love most about Bellingham is how this community knows how to celebrate what makes our corner of the Pacific Northwest special!! Throughout the year, our waterfront, streets, and parks come alive with festivals that celebrate everything from mountain biking and music to public art, seafood, storytelling, and fire (yes, actual fire.)

For me, these festivals are more than just fun things to put on the calendar. They capture so much of what I enjoy about living in Bellingham: creativity, community, the outdoors, local culture, and that unmistakable Pacific Northwest spirit.

Here are four Bellingham festivals I especially love.

NW Tune-Up: Bikes, Music, and Bellingham Energy

If you want to experience Bellingham's outdoor culture and community energy all in one place, NW Tune-Up is hard to beat.

NW Tune-Up is a summer bike and music festival that brings mountain biking, live music, art, local makers, food, and drinks together on Bellingham's Waterfront Bike Park. Bellingham has become such an incredible destination for mountain biking, and I love seeing that part of our community celebrated in such a big, welcoming way.

There's an energy to Tune-Up that I really enjoy. You might spend part of the day watching a race or checking out the bikes, wander through the makers market, and then finish the evening listening to live music. You don't have to be an expert mountain biker to have a great time, either. The festival includes activities for different ages and abilities, and the music and arts side of the event gives everyone a reason to join in.

What I especially love is how authentically Bellingham it feels. Bikes, music, art, local businesses, the waterfront, and people simply enjoying being outside together—it feels like so many of the things our community loves rolled into one epic summer weekend.

Noisy Waters Mural Festival: Watching Art Come to Life

Noisy Waters Mural Festival is one of those events that reminds me just how creative Bellingham is.

The festival, crafted by Paper Whale, brings muralists from all over the world together for three days of live painting on the Bellingham waterfront (the same area as Tune-Up, but completely transformed). Artists create original works on 8-by-8-foot panels while festivalgoers get to watch the process unfold in real time. The community then votes, with winning artists earning commissions to create larger permanent murals around Bellingham.

I love the idea that we're not simply looking at finished artwork—we get to see it being created. There is something completely different about watching a blank surface slowly become a work of art and seeing each artist's personality and style emerge. Though, I did face some internal nervousness for some of the artists in 2026 because everyone kept chatting with the artists and I kept thinking, “Are they going to finish their piece in time?!” but sure enough everyone did complete their artwork!

And there's much more happening than mural painting. Noisy Waters incorporates music, workshops, mural tours, a makers market, activities for kids and teens, and other creative experiences. I love how interactive it is and how it invites people into the artistic process rather than making art feel like something that has to be admired from a distance. I partook in the Spray Painting Workshop with my friend and the amount of technique you can develop with a spray can is wild!

Even better, the festival leaves a lasting mark on Bellingham. Artists who participate can go on to create permanent public murals, adding more color and character to the city long after festival weekend is over.

Bellingham SeaFeast: Celebrating Our Connection to the Water

Living in Bellingham means living in a community deeply connected to the water, and Bellingham SeaFeast celebrates that relationship beautifully.

SeaFeast takes place along Squalicum Harbor and Zuanich Point Park and celebrates Bellingham's working waterfront, maritime heritage, commercial fishing community, local seafood, and coastal culture. And yes, one of my favorite parts is definitely the food!

There's something wonderful about eating fresh Pacific Northwest seafood while you're right beside the working waterfront that helps bring it to our tables. The festival features local food vendors and seafood experiences alongside opportunities to learn more about fishing, maritime industries, sustainability, and ocean conservation.

But SeaFeast isn't only about what we're eating. It's about understanding where that food comes from and recognizing the people, traditions, businesses, and ecosystems behind it. There are maritime activities, educational experiences, art, live music, vendors, and plenty for families to explore.

I love festivals where you walk away having had a wonderful time but also feeling a little more connected to where you live. SeaFeast does exactly that for me. It reminds me how much Bellingham's identity is tied to the Salish Sea and why caring for that relationship matters.

Fire & Story: Finding Warmth in the Middle of Winter

Summer festivals might have sunshine on their side, but Fire & Story proves Bellingham doesn't need warm weather to create something magical. 

Put on by Paper Whale, Fire & Story is an outdoor winter festival on the Bellingham waterfront centered around folk, light, lore, music, storytelling, art, and shared experiences. Handcrafted wood-burning fires glow throughout the festival and custom fabricated ironwork art installations while performers bring music, stories, poetry, comedy, demonstrations, and other creative experiences to multiple stages.

This festival has such a different feeling from anything else in town, and that's exactly why I enjoy it so much.

There's something timeless about gathering around a fire and listening to someone tell a story. Add illuminated artwork, live music, fire dancing, makers and performers, food, and even wood-fired saunas, and the waterfront becomes an entirely different world for a few winter nights.

I also appreciate that Fire & Story embraces winter rather than trying to escape it. You bundle up, head outside, find a fire, listen to a story or some music, and enjoy being part of the community. It turns one of the darkest parts of the year into a blazing reason to gather.

There's Always Something to Celebrate in Bellingham

What connects all four of these festivals for me is community.

NW Tune-Up celebrates our outdoor lifestyle and music scene. Noisy Waters celebrates creativity and public art. SeaFeast honors our maritime heritage and relationship with the Salish Sea. Fire & Story celebrates creativity, storytelling, warmth, and gathering together during winter.

They're completely different experiences, but each one tells a little piece of Bellingham's story.

That's what I enjoy most about them. These aren't festivals that could simply be picked up and dropped into any city. They feel connected to this place—to our landscape, our waterfront, our artists, our businesses, our history, and our people.

And whether I'm listening to music on a summer evening, watching a mural take shape, enjoying seafood beside the harbor, or warming up beside a fire on a cold winter night, I always come away reminded of how much there is to enjoy right here in Bellingham.
