My Favorite Ways to Enjoy Summer in Bellingham!

There’s something about summer in Bellingham that makes it feel like we all collectively decided it’s time to head outside. The sunshine arrives, the trails fill up, and the waterfront comes alive! It’s one of my favorite times of year and I always find myself looking forward to the traditions, festivals, and fun that make summer here so special.

One of the first things on my calendar every year is checking out the Bellingham farmers markets. There’s nothing quite like wandering through rows of fresh berries, colorful flowers, handmade goods, and baked treats while chatting with local growers and artists. I almost always leave with more than I planned to buy—but that’s part of the fun. My favorite stalls I always stop by are:

When the weather is warm, you’ll usually find me spending as much time near the water as possible. Whether it’s taking a stroll along the Bellingham waterfront, hanging out at Boulevard Park, or enjoying being on my own boat, there’s something incredibly relaxing about being close to the water.

Summer also means festival season. Bellingham has a wonderful way of bringing people together with community events, outdoor concerts, art walks, and neighborhood celebrations. Here are some of the favorites you’ll have to check out:

Downtown Sounds concert series, where live music fills the streets and everyone gathers with lawn chairs, food from local vendors, and plenty of good energy.

The Northwest Raspberry Festival in Lynden, is another classic summer tradition that celebrates one of Whatcom County’s signature crops with delicious treats and family-friendly activities. I know it’s not “Bellingham” but summer lets us adventure all over Whatcom county!

And Noisy Water Mural Festival which celebrates artists from all over who spend several days painting and spray painting art and whoever’s artwork gets the most votes gets to paint a new mural on a building in town!

Of course, living in Bellingham means easy access to some incredible hiking. I love getting an early start before the trails become busy and heading out to places like Whatcom Falls Park, Lake Padden, or Chuckanut Ridge. Every trail has its own personality, and no matter how many times I visit, I always notice something new—a hidden viewpoint, blooming wildflowers, or simply the peaceful sounds of the forest.

One thing I appreciate most about summer here is how easy it is to stay active without it feeling like exercise. I’ll enjoy an evening walk with my French bulldogs, Cookie and Louie, or simply spend an afternoon exploring Fairhaven between meetings at my office. Fairhaven’s locally owned shops and waterfront views make it one of those places where you can wander without any real destination and still have a great time.

No Bellingham summer feels complete without making time for local ice cream, seafood at Taylor Shelfish, or grabbing happy hour at Keenan’s at the Chrysalis Hotel. Sitting outside on a sunny patio with fresh local food while watching the sunset over the bay is one of those simple moments that reminds me why I love living here. If you need some inspiration for those snacks try these places:

For those looking to venture a little farther, summer is also perfect for day trips. Mount Baker offers spectacular alpine scenery, while Larrabee State Park is ideal for hiking, beachcombing, and enjoying a peaceful afternoon surrounded by nature. Just remember to check for park passes! If you enjoy scenic drives, there are countless backroads leading to farms, flower fields, and hidden viewpoints throughout Whatcom County.

Every summer feels a little different, but that's part of the magic. Whether I'm attending an annual community event, exploring a new trail, or simply enjoying a quiet evening by the water, I'm reminded that some of the best memories come from the simplest moments.

If you're spending summer in Bellingham, I hope you make time to enjoy everything this beautiful corner of the Pacific Northwest has to offer—you might just find yourself falling in love with it, too.

Have a Great summer!!
